The Play Store offers a good number of free apps for making VoIP calls from your phone. While most apps offer free calls and messages, the free Line app stands its ground by combining a social experience with VoIP services.

During initial sign-up, Line asks if you want to find and add people from your phonebook automatically and also if you should be visible to other users of Line. The main interface displays people you have added as friends on Line. You can add people by inviting them via SMS or email, scanning their QR code, searching by Line ID or by shaking two devices near each other. You can also sort your friends into groups for easy identification.

Select any contact to view his or her profile, to initiate text chat or for placing a voice/video call. The audio and video quality of the app adjusts according to your connection automatically. While the audio quality is usually great over WiFi and 3G, there is a visible lag of 1-2 seconds. The chat option lets you share images, videos, audio messages as well as your location with a friend along with stickers or emoticons.

Calls to other Line numbers are free but you can purchase credits to make phone calls to landlines and mobile phone numbers worldwide.

Line also gives the user an option to create a timeline of events. You can share status updates, photos, videos or links on your timeline. You can even choose which list of friends will be able to view your timeline. This lets you create a personalized social network without worrying that everyone will see your updates.

The latest update supports hidden chats and disposable message that are auto-trashed after a period. The Line app is ad-free and can be used in sync with the PC version post a free email account registration.
