Most casual users do not have an advanced understanding of camera modes required for stunning photography. They want to make their photographs stand out without going into too much detail. This is exactly what the free Aviary Photo Editor delivers.

The main interface of the app displays thumbnails of your most recent photograph along with an option to take a new picture using the camera or opening the photo gallery. Once you import a photo into the editor, it is placed in the center with all the tools listed at the bottom. A good feature is that you can rearrange the layout of the tools according to your choice.

To keep things simple, the first tool is one touch auto enhance that automatically enhances various aspects of the image – great for most users. Alternatively you can choose from a variety of ready to use effects, stickers and frames to improve your photographs.

There are various other tools also available for advanced effects. Using the focus tool, you can add the tilt-shift effect to an image. The Splash tool lets you choose and highlight a particular color in a photograph by turning the rest of the image black and white. There are tools to let you draw freely on the image or add text of your choice in different colours (for creating memes). You also get standard tools for cropping, red eye correction, adjust brightness, saturation, contrast, sharpness and changing the orientation of an image.

After editing, the image can be shared on social networks, sent via email or via messengers. You can set the output folder, file name format, maximum saving size (up to 15MP images supported) and the Exif data.

Depending on the editing tool you choose, the app gives you a dial to adjust the parameter by sliding it left or right or give you a brush size to determine the image are that get affected. There is no learning curve required, as it is very easy to use.

While there is no visible advertisement in the app, a lot of effects and tools require in-app purchase to be unlocked. Overall, it is one of the easiest and feature rich photo editors available for Android.

Usually, a free app does not offer you the full bouquet of image editing tools that are usually offered by a paid app. However, the free Aviary app is an exception to this rule.
