There’s no delete button on the Internet. And if you send cease-and-desist letters demanding that search engines or websites remove certain online material, it could do you more harm as the stuff you want to hide will become more popular on the web (remember those Hitler parodies). They call it the Streisand effect.
Streisand effect is named after Barbra Streisand, whose attempt to suppress photographs of her residence inadvertently generated further publicity.
Mike Masnick of Techdirt coined the term after Streisand, citing privacy violations, sued photographer Kenneth Adelman in an attempt to have an aerial photograph of her mansion removed from the public records. As a result of the case, public knowledge of the picture increased substantially; more than 420,000 people visited the site over the following month.
