You see short URLs everywhere. Facebook uses fb.me, Twitter uses t.co, Google uses goo.gl and then there are general URL shorteners like bity.ly or tinyURL.
The problem with short URLs is that the offer absolutely no hints on where that URL is pointing to. Will they take you to a legitimate site or is it pointing to some malicious file?
URL Expander is a useful Chrome add-on that will auto-expand that short URLs so you know the destination website before actually clicking it.
It will auto-replace the anchor text of the short URL with the long URL or you can hover your mouse over a short URL and the long expanded URL will show up in the browser’s status bar.
The extension also strips out all “utm_” tracking parameters of Google Analytics from shortened links.
