What is the difference between Firmware and Software?
#1: Computer software, or just software is a general term used to describe a collection of computer programs, procedures and documentation that perform some tasks on a computer system, while Firmware is a term sometimes used to denote the fixed, usually rather small, programs that internally control various electronic devices.
#2: Firmware is the interface between hardware and software, software is the interface between humans and software. Typical examples of firmware include programs controlling iPods, fax machines, TV sets, washing machines, microwave ovens etc.
#3: Firmware is a technical term used to represent a kind of small programs that are integrated into specific types of hardware. They are considered to be a part of hardware. However, at the same time, they are still just software. This is the reason why they’re called ‘Firm’, because they have both natures of hardware and software (the idea of the guy who coined this term in his mind is that an adjective ‘firm’ means harder than ’soft’ and softer than ‘hard.’)
