To use AWS Import/Export, load your computer files (data) onto an external USB or SATA hard drive. Then create a simple manifest file that includes your Amazon S3 bucket, AWS Access Key Id, and return shipping address.

amazon import workflow

1. Send an e-mail to aws-import@amazon.com with the subject line "CREATE JOB" and attach a job manifest file to it.

2. AWS Import/Export copies the manifest from your e-mail and stores it. The CREATE JOB request and manifest files are honored for up to 30 days from receipt. After that time, we will refuse to accept delivery of your storage device.

3. Amazon will return a JOBID in a “RE: CREATE JOB” success e-mail. An example JOBID is X452D.

4. Following this, you generate a signature file named “SIGNATURE” in the root directory of your storage device by signing the manifest file and JOBID with your AWS Secret Access Key.

5. Pack your media and ship it to Amazon. with the JOBID clearly labeled. Amazon receives your device, authenticates it against the manifest received by e-mail, and loads your data to Amazon S3.

6. After the data is loaded to Amazon S3, Amazone will send your device to the Return Shipping Address specified in your manifest file via standard ground shipping.
